A high technical standard as well as the most advanced equipment have always been of top priority for LTU. Thus LTU was among the first airlines to install the collision warning system "TCAS" on all aircraft, for instance.
The abbreviation TCAS stands for “Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System” – a system that provides the flight crew with information on air traffic within a radius of 35 km on a cockpit display. Other aircraft and their positions are displayed as graphical symbols.
In the event of a critical approach of other traffic to the aircraft, TCAS alerts the flight crew as well as suggests the optimal action to be taken to avert the problem. As all this happens well in advance, no hectic manoeuvres need to be flown and passengers generally do not even notice such a procedure.
A TCAS system is priced at about 150.000 EUR and its installation is mandatory on all aircraft exceeding 15 tons take-off weight or 30 passenger seats.
By the way, LTU is one of the safest airlines in the world. This much has been confirmed by experts in the journal “Aero International” that awarded LTU with the distinction “accident-free for the past 30 years”. |

The operation of perfectly maintained aircraft has always been LTU’s hallmark. Extensively trained technicians guarantee maximum care in maintenance, that – besides daily checks – is due after a certain amount of flight hours.
The so-called C-check is due after 15 months of operation at the latest. Depending on the type of C-check, the aircraft remains in the hangar for up to 25 days and in 2000-4000 man-hours is put to the acid test, i.e. down to the last single rivet.
Maintenance costs total around 100 million Euro a year at LTU. Aircraft manufacturers have awarded distinctions for the exemplary maintenance of its aircraft to LTU.
For years, LTU Technik has been a development and training centre, certified by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA - Federal Air Agency ) and authorized to carry out alterations to aircraft itself, that are otherwise only undertaken by aircraft manufacturers or by the LBA under the strictest of supervision. The technical school of LTU has also received official recognition from the LBA. With this, LTU is entitled to hold training courses for various types of aircraft and to issue certificates of success for course participants that are internationally recognised. Not only its own staff but also colleagues from other airlines can be trained at this school. Despite the relatively short run-in time, many customers have already noticed that LTU Technik provides excellent quality at very attractive rates. |
